What is bone marrow transplant? Why is it performed?

Bone marrow; Hematopoietic stem cells exist inside the long bones in our body. Stem cell transplant is a recommended treatment option for diseases such as

Acute Myeloid Leukemia, Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, Myelodysplastic syndromes, bone marrow deficiency (severe aplastic anaemia), immune deficiency, Hodgkin's Lymphoma and Neuroblastoma, if the treatments applied have no expected benefit.

Healthy stem cells can be transplanted from one individual to another (allogeneic) or the individual's own cells (autologous) can be collected and cryopreserved and be transferred to herself/himself by bone marrow or stem cell transplant. Healthy HLA matching relatives or unrelated donors, cord blood or haploidentical (half-matched) mother-father-child-brothers can be utilized as allogeneic stem cell source. Autologous stem cell source is the individual himself/herself.

General Information About Unit:

Bone Marrow Transplant (transplantation) unit consists of 16 rooms with a special ventilation system and protection conditions. Air flowing inside the rooms is positive pressure and it can be converted into negative pressure when necessary) Air is also being cleaned constantly by a system with high efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter.

The patient is not allowed to go out of the room and the unit. Admission time varies between 30 and 45 days. This time period varies depending upon the type of transplant, from person to person and diseases. Only one companion is allowed for each patient in our country. The companion is trained before transplant and informed about washing his/her hands while entering the room, putting his/her mask and not coming to the unit in case of having the onset of upper respiratory tract infection. One individual is always ready for replacement in case of the companion's possible sickness.

The staff of Bone Marrow Transplant Unit start to work when they complete the necessary in-service trainings about the department.

Units of the Department:

Apheresis Center: It is a center in where we work coordinately with for collection of peripherical stem cells, plasmapheresis process and photopheresis process and it is located inside our hospital.

Stem Cell Laboratory: It is a lab in where the dose of bone marrow collected in the operating theatre or peripherical stem cells collected by the apheresis center to infuse into the patient is adjusted, plasma and erythrocyte depletion are performed in case of being required and the remaining doses after infusion are cyropreserved to be re-infused into the patient.

How can I undergo examination?

Patients who are planned to undergo bone marrow transplant are pre-investigated by the related departments such as hematology, oncology, immunology and metabolism in our hospital or the related departments of the other hospitals and presented to THE COMMITTEE OF BONE MARROW. Bone Marrow Transplant Polyclinic arrange the treatments and follow-ups of the patients who are approved for transplant after their transplantation procedures are completed.
