Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (POS) is a clinical status presenting itself with
1. Ovaries surrounded by 25-40 follicles which are smaller than 1cm
2. Menstrual disorder (missed period, absent period, heavy bleeding between)
3. High testosterone (hairing or findings in blood)
The rate of POS seen in women in our country is % 6-10
Late adolescence stage is expected to make a diagnosis and when the case turns 18, it is re-evaluated.
POS is not a disease, but the whole of findings caused by hormonal changes. In some cases, genetic predisposition is identified while most of the cases are incidental.
The importance of POS lies beyond the uncomfortableness caused by menstrual disorder and hairing, it is the metabolic circumstances in which it leads to, causing long term diseases.
Some of the long term complications of POS are;
• Hypertension
• Obesity
• Coagulopathies
• Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease
• Endometrium cancer
POS complicates childbearing, also causing infertility. POS Treatment shows an alteration depending upon women's life period.
