Pulmonary Medicine in Ankara City Hospital started to provide service in February 7, 2019. Three professors and three associate professors are our educational staff. Clinical procedures are carried out with 14 specialist doctors and 10 resident doctors. Pulmonary Medicine clinic has the capacity of 48 beds, a ward with the capacity of 32 beds and 2nd Step Intensive Care Unit with the capacity of 16 beds. Outpatient and inpatient polyclinic and consultation services are provided in both Cardiovascular Hospital and in the other hospital blocks.

All chest and lung related diseases are followed up and treated in our Pulmonary Medicine Department. Patients are treated by a very experienced team in the field of Pulmonary Thromboembolism. In critical cases systemic thrombolytic therapy can be applied and local thrombolytic therapy by catheter can be applied in association with the Interventional Radiology clinic for selected cases. Pulmonary Hypertension cases are evaluated by the multidisciplinary committee and the necessary follow-up and treatment are carried out.

A detailed clinical, laboratory and radiological evaluation is performed in the polyclinics for patients with COPD, Bronchiectasis, restrictive diseases such as Kyphoscoliosis. Then, respiratory physiotherapy cases are investigated by a cardiology physician for their cardiac reserves by echocardiography. After evaluation of exercise capacities with the shuttle walking test (shuttle) with increasing speed in our newly established physiotherapy unit, respiratory physiotherapy is performed. It includes 2-month outpatient physiotherapy programme for twice (2 days) a week.

In our Pulmonary Medicine Department, bronchoscopic methods are used for lung cancer diagnosis/staging and some other diseases. Procedures with electrocautery is able to be performed when necessary in suitable cases. The Endobronchial ultrasonography (EBUS) unit, is carried out by specialist doctors who have gained experience since 2011. There are 2 bronchoscopy and 2 (EBUS) units in Pulmonary Medicine, two bronchoscopic procedures can be performed simultaneously. Procedures using portable bronchoscopy can be carried out in IC units. The EBUS procedure is performed under sedation with the presence of a specialist anesthesiologist, after all the necessary evaluations are completed. In the presence of lymphadenopathy, the diagnosis can be made by noninvasive method for benign and malignant etiologies. In addition, cases associated with malignant diagnosis, EBUS procedure is applied for recurrence and staging.
